Unicode resource, 17 October 1998
=================================
The !Unicode resources directory can be thought of as a system wide
resource in the same way as !Fonts, !Scrap and !System. It should be
placed inside your !Boot application, in '!Boot.Resources' (restart
the machine after copying it there), to ensure that it is seen by the
computer when the machine starts up.
The Unicode resource stores a set of mapping tables that convert between
different character encodings. These basically take some number which
represents a particular letter or symbol, and work out what letter or
symbol should be displayed. This is required for true internationalisation
of the operating system (enabling display of Japanese, Korean, Chinese,
Cyrillic, etc. text). Unicode is the first step in providing this
functionality throughout RISC OS.
Versions of !Browse prior to 1.28 Beta (04-Dec-1997) have an 'Encodings'
directory inside them. The functionality of this is now inside Unicode.
The 'Encodings' directory of older browsers does not need to be copied
into the new browser.
For more information on Unicode itself, see the Unicode home page at:
